My art career began in 1935 at the Nova Scotia College of Art as
it was then called and it was headed by an eccentric English lady
whose name was Elizabeth Styring Nutt, so naturally she was known as
Miss Art of the nut school! From there I progressed to the Ipswich
School of Arts and Crafts in Ipswich England. Sometime around 1940 1
transferred to the Chestor Studios, a commercial establishment in
London, specializing in commercial photography and catalogue
illustration and that was the last of any formal training in art for
me, except for a short stint at the Chelmsford Polytechnic School in
Chelmsford England. The rest was all sweat equity and learning by
the many mistakes I have made. As the Second World War was then
raging my next step was into the RAF where I served in an aerodrome
defense unit in the Far East returning to Canada in 1948. In my home
country I drifted into and out of many positions on the fringes of
the world of art, such as window display, sign painting, television
graphics etc., always adding to my skills and knowledge, so after
many years and many tears I have "landed" in Sussex where I dispense
a great fund of expertise to any who wish to tap into
it. |
